The mountains around Chichibu are composed of rock that was formed in the southern seas roughly 200 million years ago. About 15-17 million years ago, the Chichibu Basin was a sea known as \u201cPaleo Chichibu Bay\u201d. Even today, you can see the traces of that sea on the outcrops of the sedimentary rock formations. Chichibu Geopark is a collection of sites scattered throughout the Chichibu area where you can learn about the land and its deep relationships with the history, culture, and lifestyles in the region.
